Country Description
The Republic of South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of the continent of Africa offering plenty of exclusive villas and spa hotels to choose from. The South African coast stretches 2,798 kilometres (1,739 miles) and borders both the Atlantic and Indian oceans. To the north of South Africa lie Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland, while the Kingdom of Lesotho is an independent enclave surrounded by South African territory.
South Africa is an invigorating and dynamic country asking for adventure. With its post-apartheid identity still in the process of definition, there is undeniably an abundance of energy and a sense of progress about the place. Travellers are returning to a remarkable land that has been off the trail for way too long. From the rolling, fertile plains of the highveld and the wide open savanna of the Eastern Transvaal to the Kalahari desert and the peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains, there is something for everyone. South Africa has some marvellously developed safari parks, there are few better places to see Africa's wildlife and stay in a luxury villa at the end of the day.
South Africa has pleasant weather for visitors all year round; winter (June to September) is cooler, drier and ideal for hiking and outdoor pursuits. This is also the best time for wildlife-watching. Spring is the best time to see vast expanses of Northern Cape carpeted with wildflowers. Another consideration to take into account are school holidays, when you will find waves of South Africans stream out of the cities looking for a holiday themselves. High summer months are popular with all and offer some great festivals, including the Cape Town New Year Karnaval , and Swaziland's Incwala ceremony.
Climate
South Africa has been favoured by nature with one of the most temperate climates on the African continent, offering plenty of sunny, dry days. The main factors influencing weather conditions are altitude and the surrounding oceans. The further east you go, the rainier it becomes, but there are also damp pockets in the south-west, particularly around Cape Town.
The north coast, up from the Cape becomes progressively drier and hotter, culminating in the desert region just south of Namibia. Along the south coast the weather is pleasant, but the east coast becomes increasingly tropical the further north you go. When it gets too humid and sticky, head for the highlands, which are pleasant even in summer. The north-eastern hump gets very hot and there are spectacular storms there in summer, even in winter the days are sunny and warm..
