Country Description

Portugal is a fabulous place to visit offering many luxury villas; experience its rich seafaring past, superb beach resorts, wistful towns and a landscape wreathed in olive groves, vineyards and wheat fields. Filled with UNESCO World Heritage sites and graced by one of Europe's most relaxed and attractive capitals, it also remains refreshingly unspoilt. Savouring life slowly is a Portuguese passion, and much of the best is humble - traditional folk festivals; simple, honest food drowning in olive oil; music that pulls at the heart strings, recalling past love and glories; and markets overflowing with fish, fruit and flowers.

Enjoy Portugal’s exclusive villa accommodation and warm sunny weather exploring centuries-old vineyards, stone villages in the mountains or soaking up rays on the magnificent southern shoreline. Dramatic scenery lies all along the coast from windswept cliffs with edge-of-the-world views to wild dune-covered beaches and perhaps this is what makes them so popular. Hiking, surfing, windsurfing, horse-riding, big game fishing, kayaking, diving, golfing, mountain biking and much more is also on offer.

Portugal has fascinating cities, its lively capital, Lisbon, and its northern sibling, Porto, are magical places for the wanderer, with picturesque neighbourhoods, broad plazas and old-fashioned trams still rattling through the streets. Both cities also have their share of enticing urban life, with eclectic restaurants, colourful boutiques, bohemian cafes and stylish nightclubs. Smaller towns offer their own charm, with well-preserved medieval quarters that invite exploring in towns like Évora, Coimbra, Guimarães and Braga attractive to visit.

For those seeking a different slice of Portuguese culture, why not join in with the revelry at a traditional festival, discover the melancholic music of fado (Portugal's answer to the Blues), sample the great fruits of the sea or go port wine tasting before retiring to your own private luxury villa. Perhaps best of all, visitors can stay overnight in some beautiful settings, from converted medieval monasteries to sprawling manor houses, elegant beach resorts, restored farmhouses to urban townhouses set in the heart of a historic neighbourhood. The choices are endless....

Climate

Summers are hot and dry throughout Portugal, particularly in the Algarve, which experiences very little rain. However refreshing sea breezes make for pleasant conditions. Winters are cold and wet, particularly in the northern and west coast regions. Spring and autumn are good times to visit with less crowded beaches, restaurants and golf courses.

Portugal climate is sometimes classified as Mediterranean and is one of the warmest European countries, the annual temperature averages in mainland Portugal are 13 °C (55 °F); in the north 18 °C (64 °F) and in the south it is over 20 °C (68°F) on the warmest spots, like south coast of Madeira island.
Lisbon has a warm climate, with sunny spring and summer days when temperatures frequently reach 85ºF (30ºC) or above. Winters are wet and windy, temperatures averaging around 50ºF (10ºC).
