Country Description
Morocco is a country in North Africa, it has a coast on the Atlantic Ocean that reaches past the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco has international borders with Algeria to the east, Spain to the north and Mauritania to the south. Morocco's capital city is Rabat; its largest city is its main port, Casablanca.
Morocco has varied geography which includes four separate mountain ranges, in addition to lush river valleys, beautiful sandy coasts, and wide expanses of desert. The three most prominent mountain ranges, which run parallel to each other from the southwest to the northeast, are the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas, and the Anti-Atlas. The ascent of the country's highest peak, Jebel Toukbal at 13,665 ft./4,165 m.; is a spectacular and not particularly difficult High Atlas trek. The Moroccan coastline, which fronts onto both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, offers plenty of great beaches as well as a number of fascinating old coastal cities. In the southeast, Morocco's mountain ranges yield inevitably to the desolate expanse of the Sahara. The rivers that flow down this side of the High Atlas support long, narrow, and lush river valleys that resemble linear oases. Offering an abundance of activities and tourist sites, it’s no wonder Morocco is a popular destination for visitors year after year.
Moroccan cuisine has long been considered as one of the most diversified cuisines in the world. This is a result of the centuries-long interaction of Morocco with the outside world. The cuisine of Morocco is a mix of Berber, Spanish, Corsican, Portuguese, Moorish, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and African cuisines. Spices are used extensively in Moroccan food. While spices have been imported to Morocco for thousands of years, many ingredients, like saffron from Tiliouine, mint and olives from Meknes, and oranges and lemons from Fez, are home-grown. Chicken is the most widely eaten meat in Morocco. The most commonly eaten red meat in Morocco is beef; lamb is preferred, but is relatively expensive. Couscous is the most famous Moroccan dish along with pastilla, tajine, and harira. The most popular drink is green tea with mint. The tea is accompanied with hard sugar cones or lumps.
Climate
Morocco’s climate is Mediterranean, which becomes more extreme towards the interior regions where it is mountainous. Generally the climate in Morocco remains quite dry for most of the year. You can expect a little rain between November and March. The northern coast’s weather is fair almost all year round, although winter can bring cool and wet conditions. Beaches further south are prone to fog in the summer months, an occurrence caused when the heat of the desert meets the chill Atlantic current. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 30°C) during the day and cool to cold (around 15°C) at night. The temperature is incredibly high in the southern and south eastern desert areas. On the other hand, the temperature drops considerably in the higher lying mountainous areas, even getting to freezing point at night. April to October is the main trekking season; when the mountain snows start to thaw. High season is mid-June until mid-September.
