Country Description

Originally, travellers visited Greece to see the archaeological sites, which meant that tourism concentrated upon Athens, Rhodes, Crete and the Peloponnese. Over the last 30 years the increasingly popular concept of the package holiday came to Greece, and Greece's impeccable record for sunshine, sea bathing in crystal waters and fabulous sea views became a bigger attraction than its historical legacy. It is fascinating, however, to learn just a little about the influences that shaped the islands and their culture. Throughout all the invasions and occupations, the Greek language and religion has miraculously survived intact as well as marvelously independent Greek spirit.

Greece is in southeastern Europe, situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. It is bordered by Albania, and Bulgaria to the north and by Turkey to the east. The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of mainland Greece, while the Ionian Sea lies to the west. Both, parts of the eastern Mediterranean basin, feature a vast number of islands. Greece offers the comforts of modern Europe in close proximity to the stark beauty of the ancient world. The historical and cultural heritage of Greece continues to boom throughout the modern Western world - in its literature, art, philosophy and politics.

Greece’s 1,400 islands are scattered throughout the calm blue waters of the Aegean, the largest is Crete; each has its own special story and a lot to offer. The islands have an untouched simplicity which still sets the tone, an array of sympathetic hotels that seem to have grown out of fishing villages that can trace their origins back 2000 years, a culture of Mediterranean ease where boats are still useful alternatives to travel by road. Picturesque villages tumbling whitewashed into the startling blue of the Mediterranean Sea, ancient ruins washed mellow yellow by the low light of a summer evening and an ancient culture that sparked the birth of Western civilisation.Greece offers some of Europe’s best beaches, a lively sense of pleasure, a distinctive cuisine and a rattling, revitalising selection of wines and spirits.
