Country Description

Antigua is a large, 108 square mile island with a coastline of a multitude of coves and harbours which were once volcanic craters. There are more than 365 beaches of fine white sand, fringed with palms, 'one for each day of the year'. The island’s highest point is Boggy Peak (402m/1,318ft) and its capital is St John's. Antigua is most famous for its Sailing and it is one of the major centres for the Caribbean. Sailing is centred on English and Falmouth Harbours in the South-east of the island, which becomes extremely lively in the season (from December to April).

The island is also a popular port of call for cruise ships, including some of the smaller sailing ships. Dickenson Bay, the island’s most popular beach, is a lively centre for watersports, but if you are an advanced windsurfer or kitesurfer you will find very good onshore winds and facilities in the North-east. Antigua is excellent for diving and snorkelling as it has great reefs and wrecks.

There is so much to explore in Antigua like Nelson's Dockyard National Park - located at English Harbour, on the south coast in a fine natural harbour. It was an English garrisoned station during the Napoleonic Wars, and Admiral Nelson commanded here from 1784. This is a restored Georgian naval dockyard and the era is recaptured at the Admiral's House Museum. There are also crafts shops and restaurants and tours of the dockyard are given. You can trek the nature trails through the park wich have some great views of the coast.

The northwestern area is where you'll find most of the beaches, nightlife, shopping, watersports facilities and restaurants and is where most of the resorts and hotels are scattered. There is so much to do and see on Antigua due to its size and rich history aside from sunning on the beach. A selection of the activities are listed below:

* Watersports
* Sailing
* Scuba Diving and snorkelling
* Fishing
* Cycling
* Tennis
* Golf – there are two golf courses on Antigua, both accept visitors
* Exploring the Island and its history
* Shopping
* Nightlife
