Area Description

Saint-Tropez is set on the blue waters of the Golfe, it is a modern version of a medieval town. Known for the line of luxury yachts in her harbour and the facing line of terrace cafés, divided by a parade of strolling tourists and slowly cruising sports cars. "People watching" is a favourite sport in Saint-Tropez in the summer, visitors like to sit in the outdoor cafés, hoping either to be seen or to see someone else.

Night life is very lively and often one can see helicopters bringing elegant guests to private parties, in one of the many luxurious villas in the bay. La Voile Rouge is a revered beachfront restaurant that has been a legend for four decades, serving pricey French fare and the finest champagne to the rich and famous since 1968, ideally you want to arrive in your yacht! Some say the most famous of the restaurant/bars is Club 55, which takes its name from the year in which Roger Vadim filmed "And God Created Women" in St Tropez. This film created two French icons, Brigitte Bardot and the town of St Tropez. Some sections of the beach are public. From the beaches, vines climb up the hills to the pretty village of Ramatuelle. Some excellent wines are produced here, particularly the roses. There are other beach clubs along the coastline of Plage de Pampelonne, all renting sun loungers and serving food and drink to match nearly everyone's taste. Many of the customers arrive by tender from the yachts moored off the beach in order to avoid the traffic.

A typical Provencal market is held usually Tuesday’s and Saturday mornings in the Place des Lices where you will find fresh produce and local crafts. This lively square has been a centre of activity in St Tropez for centuries. Located one street behind the Quai Jean Jaures, past the Office de Tourisme, the Place aux Herbes is a busy little enclave where one can find fruit, vegetables, flowers and locally caught fresh fish. There is the Place des Lices where movie stars and local stars get together to play a game of boules or sip Pastis under the plane trees. St Tropez is the neighborhood of the famous brasseries Le Gorille and Sénéquier which make a good day out.

Visit St Tropez in May, June or September, and admire the charming little streets and alleys without the crowds. Behind the cafés, the miniature streets and old buildings are picturesque, but they're more popular for the multitude of shops and restaurants than historical significance. There are endless possibilities for buying gifts and souvenirs. Worth visiting for are the religious and festive processions called "Bravades" ("act of defiance"), which are lively celebrations which begin in May and continue until the 15th of June. Originally a procession in honour of a town's patron saint, is now a colourful Provençal festival, it is one of the most famous, dating back to the 15th century. A bust of the patron saint is carried in a procession through the town with a guard of honour, with gun salvos, Provençal singing and dancing.

The best Tropezien beaches are located along the coast in the Baie de Pampelonne, which lies south of Saint-Tropez and east of Ramatuelle. Pampelonne offers a collection of beaches along its five kilometre shore. Each beach is around thirty metres wide with its own beach hut and private or public tanning area. Some beaches are very chic and offer fashion shows on the beach, others are quiet and relaxing and some even have restaurants and cafés directly on the water's edge. Bouillabaisse Beach, Caneliers Beach and Salins Beach are a few of the 40 on the peninsula. Many of the beaches offer windsurfing, sailing and canoeing equipment for rent, while others offer an abundance of motorized water sports, such as power boats, jet bikes and water skiing.
