Area Description

Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, lying on the Indian Ocean. This coastal city of Mombasa is a major tourist destination with some of the best beaches in the World, offering exotic beaches, diverse marine life, luxurious villas, deep-sea fishing, and water sports activities such as scuba diving and sailing, not to mention the friendly people!

The city is located on Mombasa Island, which is separated from the mainland by two creeks: Tudor Creek and Kilindini Harbour. The island is connected to the mainland to the north by the Nyali Bridge, to the south by the Likoni Ferry and to the west by the Makupa Causeway, alongside which runs the Uganda Railway. The port serves both Kenya and countries of the interior, linking them to the Ocean; the town is served by Moi International Airport.

There is a vibrant mixture of cultures, architecture and entertainment in Mombasa. Being located at the Shimba Hills National Reserve, you can easily visit the reserve and will encounter a lovely forest setting with elephant, leopard and the rare, sable antelope. Towards the south, there are a number of beautiful beaches, luxury villas and exclusive resort hotels. Visit the pleasant Shimoni Island and Wasini islands where you will find authentic Swahili culture and a protected marine reserve. The North of Mombasa offers several stunning beaches like Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu, Kikambala and Vipingo which are well-worth a visit. You will come across the exotic town of Kilifi in the north which is home to artists and adventurers from all over the World.

In addition to its beautiful beaches and luxurious accommodation; Mombasa offers a diverse cultural history. The City traces many of its cultural traditions to previous Portuguese, Arab and British settlers – all of which have left a lasting influence on the City’s food, architecture, and people. For culture, take a stroll into the Old Town to get a taste of Swahili culture and street food, then visit the historic Fort Jesus. Mombasa hosts lots of quality restaurants offering everything from British, Chinese, Indian and Italian cuisine, to a variety of local and traditional Kenyan dishes. Given its ocean-side location, seafood options are abundant and outstanding and can often be eaten within a couple of hours of being caught. Evening entertainment is in abundance with many dance clubs, casinos, go to the cinema, bowling or relax in a nice bar.

Diani Beach

Diani Beach is famous for its perfect white and natural beaches; it has a nice variety of shopping centres, high class restaurants, bars, and diving schools alone with some exclusive luxury villas. Lying on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya, 30 km (40 minutes drive) south of Mombasa and its international airport. It is located along a beautiful white-sanded beach which is about 25 km long and it merges with the small town of Ukunda which is home to a small airstrip. The area is known for its coral reefs, the closely located Shimba Hills National Reserve and for its black-and-white colobus monkeys. Thanks to warm seas and beautiful coral reefs it is also one of the best places to get close to the richly diverse marine life of the southern Kenyan coast, by snorkelling, scuba-diving or joining a boat safari.
