Area Description
Megève is a traditional alpine village at the foot of the Mont Blanc within an hour’s drive of Geneva. Enriched in its heritage and old rustic charm, it has become a popular resort in France throughout both winter and summer months. Megeve is the first French purpose-built ski resort – don’t be alarmed, the predominant style of picturesque wooden chalets is very different to the styles used in the more modern French resorts! Originally modelled on St Moritz and built in the 1920's, the charming town soon became a popular meeting place for the rich and famous. Many jet-set may have moved on but Megeve's charm remains and still attracts a good number of visitors every year.
Megève is an enchanting village with narrow cobbled streets, tastefully restored buildings, fountains, a pretty church, and a beautifully preserved medieval centre. There are lots of boutique shops, jewellery, food, antique and gift shops. Take a relaxing lunch at one of the many traditional restaurants. Or why not pamper yourself at the various beauty centres offering reflexology for face and body, Thalassotherapy treatments, facials, massages and body scrubs.
For the more active there is a sports centre with ice rink, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, climbing wall, tennis courts and gym. Other activities include an adventure park, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, archery, fishing, paragliding, rafting, canyoning, mountaineering, plenty of marked paths for walkers and cyclists surround the area and much more. Golfers can enjoy the diversity of 3 golf courses in the surrounding area, including Golf Club du Mont d’Arbois, Megève, Golf-Club de Chamonix, and Golf Le Rocher Blanc, Le Grand-Bornand. There is also a 5 hole training course with driving range and putting green, and an open air driving range with instructors available.
Megeve is in an ideal location, in the heart of the Pays du Mont Blanc which is made up of geologically different mountain ranges. In the space of a few kilometres the surrounding geology completely changes; from the impressive cliff faces of les Fiz mountains to the slightly meeker rock faces of les Aiguilles Rouges, from the glaciers on Mont-Blanc massif to the limestone gullies of the Aravis chain. During the summer, the mountain is accessible by foot, mountain bike, horse and by cable car, and as you would expect, the views are tremendous. It is recommended to take a guide if you are looking to make the most of the mountains.
Throughout the summer there are various traditional shows, festivals and exhibitions to entertain visitors and locals alike in Megeve. The music and golf festivals in June are popular as is the festival du baroque in early July. Please visit www.megeve.com for a full list of activities.
