Area Description

Les Contamines-Montjoie is located at an altitude of 1164m, nestled under the Mont Blanc Massif, and lies at the top of the “secret valley” beyond the beautiful spa town of St Gervais-le-bain. Les Contamines-Montjoie is a traditional French resort and local government intervention has ensured that the authentic architecture and serene nature has been preserved. It has so much to offer visitors throughout the summer apart from being a colourful and peaceful haven, from adventure activities, guided walking, exploring the village or relaxing in the sunshine; you may have trouble fitting everything into a week’s stay!

Historical treasures such as the two outstanding baroque churches are open for visitors to discover. In recognition of the wonder of nature, 5,500 hectares of alpine terrain has been annexed as Les Contamines Montjoie Nature Reserve – you can explore it in the company of a mountain guide. Les Contamines Montjoie is well-known for its community spirit and the village events centre is always buzzing. Summer activities include a fête in August to celebrate the very existence of Les Contamines-Montjoie, art exhibitions, guided walking excursions and even a choral music “camp”.

This traditional alpine village offers a helpful tourist information bureau, a small but well-stocked supermarket, souvenir and gift shops showcasing regional specialities, a cinema, currency exchange services and ATM, a post office, lending library, photo developing services and medical facilities. Each week throughout the year there is a traditional village market.

The beauty of Les Contamines Montjoie, is that it offers peace and tranquillity in a secret hideaway with easy access to the bright lights of nearby Chamonix, Megève and other better-known resorts. Ski the Vallée Blanche, explore the Aiguille du Midi by cablecar, discover gorges and waterfalls, visit a mountain dog breeding centre and experience an “arbre adventure”. Also well worth a visit and just a short trip down the valley is the beautiful town of St. Gervais where you can experience the open-air swimming pool or pamper yourself at the mountain thermal spa. Treatments on offer include hydro-massage, hot mud applications, jet showers and a whole array of other body cares. Alternatively, take the tramway from St. Gervais to Nid d’Aigle – the Eagles Nest - just beneath the summit of Mont Blanc – no easier or more spectacular way to reach the higher altitudes.

Les Contamines Montjoie activities are endless; there are many walks and guided hikes to explore as well as the natural park area - from the village, winding in and out of the pine forest, alongside the lovely Bon Nant river, a pretty path leads you there. Here there are 8 championship tennis courts, adventure courses, a rock climbing school, horse riding, donkey rides, archery, golf driving and mini-golf, with a bar and restaurant overlooking a small swimming and boating lake.

In Les Contamines-Montjoie you can enjoy some great mountain biking up in the mountains by taking the ski lifts, or you can follow waymarked trails such as the Val Montjoie trail, which runs between Les Contamines-Montjoie and Saint-Gervais, winding through meadows and small fields alongside the lively Bon Nant: a good training ride before you have a go at the mountain trails such as the Diamant Vert! Other exciting activities such as rafting and paragliding are available close by in the Mont Blanc Region.
