Area Description

Imperia is a coastal city in the region of Liguria, Italy known as ‘The Rivera of Flowers’. It is the capital of the province of Imperia, and historically it was capital of the Intemelia district of Liguria. The area is mountainous and hilly, situated between the Maritime Alps to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the south and France to the west. It has a strong Italian flair, with a hint of French culture; this is an area of outstanding natural beauty where sports and outdoor activities are in abundance.

Imperia consists of the two historical districts of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, which lie on either side of the River Impero that gives its name to the city. Porto Maurizio is situated on a peninsula to the west of the river, stretching along the coastline. It is the more colourful and wealthy district of the city being the political and cultural and therefore attracts the most tourists. Stroll through the old streets and little winding alleys all along the uphill, you will find a small Naval Museum, and a beautiful Cathdral of San Maurizio, then walk down the hill to the seaport with a very long gulf line. A long pleasant walk along the road with flowers and trees to the gulf towards the end of Port Mariuzio which will take you to an ancient roman bridge to which links the other village Oneglia. Oneglia lies on an alluvial plain to the east of the Impero, and with its working port is the more modern and industrial of the two districts. At its centre lies Dante Square.

In the middle of the Prino Valley lies the fascinating town of Dolcedo, with its aggregated buildings and unique Grande Bridge. Surrounded by lush olive groves and vineyards, the old part of the town has many architectural gems to explore, especially the charming San Tommaso Church. It is a great place to explore the area and its activities on offer including fishing, surfing, sailing, windsurfing, horse riding, walking and mountain biking. There are excursions that start in Dolcedo and take you to some places of great natural interest, including Monte Faldo (1149 m.) as well as historic interest, such as Monte Folia, where archaeological finds have been made.

Next to Dolcedo you will find San Remo and its famous Casino. It is the heart of the Italian Riviera of Flowers, and offers a huge amount in the way of art, culture and shows, including the Italian Song Festival. It is also great for sports, especially fishing, diving, canoeing, golf, horse riding and wind surfing.
The village of Diano San Pietro is known for its magnificent skyline buildings and sailing and surfing facilities from the glorious beaches which top class!
