Area Description

Lying off the Eastern coast of mainland Greece in crystal clear turquoise waters, the 11 Sporades Islands are densely wooded and mountainous. Alonissos is one of only 4 inhabited islands in the group, and the only inhabited island in the marine conservation area. The seas surrounding Alonissos are considered to be the cleanest in the Aegean and amongst the cleanest and bluest to be experienced anywhere. Alonissos is a beautiful, tranquil island of unique natural beauty with a great atmosphere, an ideal place to enjoy beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters. You can swim at the beach of Patitiri and the nearby beaches of Rousoum, Gialos, Platsoukia, and Chrisi Milia -the most beautiful beach of the island.

The Old Village – Palia Alonissos
This picturesque village was the capital of Alonissos until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1965. Many houses have now been restored into beautiful homes or transformed into charming restaurants, cafés or shops, whitewashed houses, narrow stone paths and winding steps make a lovely stroll of an afternoon. At the summit of the Village is a charming street lined with restaurants and boutiques; at the very end of this street is a cafe serving authentic Greek sweets and ice cream with breathtaking views. Here you will stumble upon many colourful shops selling individual handcrafted jewellery, clothes, art and gifts, mostly from local artists. The walk to the top of the Old Village is delightful; still surviving Byzantine churches like the chapel of Agio Anargyroi and the church of Agios Andreas are worth visiting. Parts of old Byzantine walls restored by the Venetians to fortify the city have also survived the Earthquake.

Patitiri is the main port of the Island with a small beach or shingle and course sand and clear swimming waters. The front is lined with Tavernas and shops and the sleepy pace of life is only interrupted by the regular arrival of Flying Dolphins and enthusiastic visitors. Patitiri is a favourite stop-over for sailing and pleasure boats, as well as evening diners and strollers.

Getting to Alonissos Island
Alonissos does not have its own airport. The best way to reach Alonissos is to fly to Skiathos, and then get a hydrofoil or ferry, which takes approximately 1 hour. Skiathos is served by international charter flights and domestic flights which run from May to October. The main international airports are Thessaloniki and Athens which have year-round scheduled international services. It is also possible to fly to Volos, the nearest mainland town and get a hydrofoil or ferry from here. Agios Constantinos and Thessaloniki as well as other islands also have ferrys to Alonossos. Alkyon Travel in Athens, Agios Constantinos and Alonissos run a private bus service linking to the various sea crossings and will book through tickets.

The climate in Alonissos is similar to one of the other northern Sporades (Skiathos and Skopelos), a climate characterised by mild winters with frequent rainfalls and warm summers with quite high temperatures, cooling thanks to the blowing “meltemia” (north winds) during late July and early August.
